Medical Workflow Overview

Welcome to the LeaRes Medical Workflow guide. This tutorial series will teach you how to use LeaRes’s medical imaging capabilities, from raw DICOM data to reconstructed anatomy and Digital Twin simulation.

Intended use. LeaRes is a CE Class I medical device software that does not provide diagnosis. Virtual Spirometry and Reinflation Analysis are Research Use Only modules, outside the declared intended use. Read Data Hierarchy, Intended Use, and Safety before working on real patient data.

What You’ll Learn

The Medical Workflow enables healthcare professionals and researchers to:

  • Upload and manage DICOM data (CT and MRI scans) for patient records
  • Segment anatomical structures using AI-powered automatic segmentation or precise manual tools
  • Reconstruct 3D surface models from segmented anatomy with advanced mesh processing
  • Run virtual spirometry on reconstructed lung models (RUO)
  • Study lung reinflation with reinflation analysis (RUO)

The Medical Workflow Sequence

The typical workflow follows these stages:

1. Data Acquisition

Upload DICOM imaging data (CT or MRI scans) for a patient and organize it within the hierarchical database structure.

2. Segmentation

Identify and isolate anatomical structures using:

  • Auto3DSeg: AI-powered automatic segmentation for rapid results
  • Manual Tools: Region growing and thresholding for precise control

3. 3D Reconstruction

The surface mesh is generated automatically from the segment, followed by CleanUp operations (smoothing, decimation, removing small bits).

4. Analysis (Research Use Only)

Run Digital Twin analyses on the reconstructed geometry:

  • Virtual Spirometry: model respiratory mechanics from reconstructed lung models
  • Reinflation Analysis: study how remaining lobes re-expand after a simulated resection

Both are RUO modules: their output is for study and investigation, not for a clinical decision about an individual patient.

5. Storage and Reporting

Store all anatomical data, segmentations, and analysis results in the MongoDB database for future reference and reporting.

Prerequisites

Before starting the Medical Workflow, ensure you have:

  • Patient Record: A patient created in the LeaRes database
  • DICOM Data: CT or MRI scan files in DICOM format (folder, ZIP archive, or VTI volume)
  • System Access: Appropriate permissions to upload and analyze medical data
  • Browser Requirements: Modern web browser with WebGL support for 3D visualization
